The Creativity is glowing

Week 5 of Connect: Sensory Science

In this week of Connect: Sensory Science, the kids’ creative sides really shone through, and we worked with different colors, textures, and even lights! We did all kinds of fun activities like squeegee painting, glass jar fireworks, and for our main activity, solar mason jars (which by the way, turned out INCREDIBLE).

For our squeegee painting activity, we started by watching a short video about it just for fun, and then began our own painting. The kids were given a canvas and an array of paints to choose from. They then placed thick dots of paint on their canvas and then waited their turn to drag the squeegee down the canvas. The blend of colours and diversity between the kids' paintings was really cool!

For the next activity, glass jar fireworks, we kept to our science theme and got to try this super colourful experiment! We first watched a video so the kids could learn the measurements, then I gave out the supplies. Everyone was given a mason jar, cooking oil, and food colouring. The kids filled their cups with water, then put 3 tablespoons of cooking oil on top, and finally the drops of food colouring. The drops stayed on top of the oil for a little bit of time, which built suspense, then all at once the drops fell through the oil and into the water. This created and little "firework" which the kids thought was pretty cool, and they even said it looked like a dragon!

For our main and final project of the night, we made solar mason jars! Everyone was given a mason jar, string of LED lights, hot glue gun, and lots of glass pebbles. We first put together our LED lights that would be placed inside the jar. Then the kids got to work on hot gluing all of the glass pebbles on the jar. This created a really cool texture, and the pebbles also caused the light to reflect off of the LED'S and create quite the disco affect! The kids were really proud of their hard work and are so excited to place the solar mason jar in their bedrooms or outside on their patios in the spring time.

This week was so much fun, and the kids also really enjoyed it! We only have one week left of Connect: Sensory Science, and we cannot wait to see what it has in store.
