Whatever Floats your Boat!
Week 3 of Connect: Nukko Lake Group
We had lots of fun for Week 3 of our Connect: Nukko Lake group! At the start of the group, we caught up with the kids about how they have been since the last time we saw them two weeks ago, and how excited everyone was for Christmas!
For the first 15-20 minutes of the group, the kids got to finish up their popsicle stick boats before we tested them out on the water – which the kids were super excited for! Once the kids finished building their boats, Amy and I had them guess how many rocks they thought their boat could hold. One group guessed 4, and the other group guessed 6. We tested one boat at a time, and I was the one who placed the rocks on their boats. The one group that guessed that their boat would hold 6 rocks actually held 11-13 rocks, and the other boat held 6 rocks! In the end, both of the boats floated which was the main goal! We then had some Oreos as a snack (which the kids loved), and then we talked about what the kids learned and if they found this activity challenging.
This boat making activity helped the kids with team work skills, communication in building their boats, and lots of critical thinking to make sure their boats floated, and even held some rocks!
We then had 5-10 minutes left of the group, so we let the kids play basketball and ping pong.
With the winter break approaching, this group will now be paused until the second week of January. We are already so excited to start some new activities with the kids in the new year!
