communication is key

Week 1 of Connect: Nukko Lake

Our Connect: Nukko Lake group is back in full swing! This group intends to create a fun and safe space for the kids of Nukko Lake Elementary to be themselves, learn new skills, and connect with their peers! I am so excited to be part of this group once again this year.

Since today was our first session, we started out with discussing some basic group rules. Some of the main rules discussed were: Be kind, try not to talk over others, you can "pass" on the activity if you want to, and be respectful to yourself, others, and the room. We then did our first icebreaker game, "Would you rather."

For our main activity, the kids did a spaghetti tower challenge. We divided the 7 kids into partners and one group of three. They were all given a pack of spaghetti, masking tape, and one jumbo marshmallow. The task given was to create a spaghetti noodle tower that could support the marshmallow!

After the kids were done, they presented their towers & original ideas. For our discussion we asked the kids how they felt about the towers, and if it was easier to work in a group or alone. The discussion we had was centred around communication, and how it's important to communicate with your peers, while also being willing to hear other ideas and take them into consideration.

This week was a blast, and valuable lessons were already learned! I am excited to see what next week brings.
