UNTIL NEXT TIME!
Week 6 of the Connect: Arts and Crafts Program
With school ending the day before the Littles were excited to start their summer vacation. What a better time to finish the last session of the group on a high note. Although this is bittersweet to write, because I had so much fun doing crafts with an awesome group of kids, the last week was still so much fun. The craft was cool because it kind of tied together every craft we did throughout the program. We had garden elements and clay figures like week 1, we used our special paints from week 2, some of our glittery stickers and materials from week 3, some watercolour painting techniques from week 4 (so awesome to see) and our 3D wooden pieces and materials from week 5. This time the kids were seasoned pros, and got straight to work.
An aspect of this week that was fun was the mini field trip. The Littles got to collect their own materials by going through the backyard and finding some! Amy took them out 2 at a time and gave them some time to collect: we saw flowers, grass, leaves, sticks, branches, pine cones and even a spider or two (by accident haha)! One of the Littles decided to use her clay to create dinosaurs and it was the best thing ever. One of my favourite parts of this week was just the way things flowed. Everyone was so comfortable with each other, chatting away, bouncing ideas off each other. One of the Littles decided to do a few little mushroom toadstools and then everyone else did the same because of how much they liked it! They were just happy to be there and it showed.
To close off the program I’d like to share my favourite moment of the group. It was awesome to see how much more they engaged with each other (and us Bigs) as time went on – and our sing-a-long day was the best. I now know most of the words to all the Encanto songs. Thanks to Bigs for giving me the opportunity to volunteer, do some crafts and feel like a kid again. It was awesome – I’ll definitely be volunteering again!
