Watercolouring with a special guest!

Week 4 of the Connect: Arts and Crafts Program

Our fourth week was a super special session of the group because we had Christina from Watts Art Academy in to help teach us how to watercolour paint!

Christina was so generous to bring in all the supplies so we were able to use some high quality professional paints and brushes. We had a mini lesson on gemstones: different kinds, colours and what they look like, and how to use water to manipulate the colours to resemble them better. Christina went step-by-step and had the kids follow along all while creating their own versions of the stones – the best part is that no two paintings were the same! Even if we copied Christina completely, the way the water and colours blend together was always unique. We had a brief intermission while our paintings dried to have a snack and after they were dry we were able to add in some details. We used pencils and pencil crayons to add cracks and dimension to the stone. We also used our paints (with less water) to add darker spots and highlight parts of their stone paintings to make them look more 3D. It was crazy to see how paintings can come to life so much more just by adding some details.

To make it even more exciting we had some extra time at the end so we were able to do a watercolour galaxy painting as well. Christina added some trees and stars to hers and it looked so magical. Huge thanks to Christina for leading the group, volunteering her time, and showing us the watercolour ropes!
