A FAIRY GOOD START TO THE PROGRAM

Week 1 of the Connect: Arts and Crafts program

After a bunch of prep and planning, I joined Amy (a mentoring coordinator and leader of the group) in Clubhouse to start our 6 week craft group – Connect: Arts and Crafts. This group has been done in the past and looked so fun, so it was exciting to get to be a part of it. Amy thought of some super cool activities and planned every week to be something different.

We had 6 Littles join us in our group - I could tell the kids were a mixture of nervous and excited, so we started off with introductions and some fun ice breaker type questions to get rid of those nerves and so they could get to know each other a little bit. We learned that everyone went to a different school and there were some pretty cool favourite animals: including dragons!

Our first craft was a big one and we got into it pretty quick so everyone had enough time to finish. We made fairy/gnome gardens and there was no limit to what you could do! There was soil, some decorative moss, tiny wooden houses to paint, popsicle sticks, cool shiny rocks and gems, blue sand, flowers and even clay to mold to whatever you want! One of the girls did the CUTEST little duck and ducklings and another did the prettiest fairy sitting on her knees in her garden. They used popsicle sticks for fences, decks, and more. They were getting so creative doing things I would never have thought of.

What was really awesome to see was the kids complimenting each other’s work and even deciding to do things similar because of how much they liked it. And even with doing things similar they all turned out SO different, which was awesome. Doing our fairy gardens took up a majority of our time but everyone managed to finish what they wanted to do and enjoyed some fruit as a snack before it was time to go! The time honestly flew by but it made everyone that much more excited for the next week.
